HOW IT IS MADE The Lost Wax Process The origins of the Lost Wax Process are shrouded in antiquities. The same process, handed down from generation to generation, was employed in the crafting of the “Zoobox Collection”. We are proud of the small family owned factories that create our designs, many exclusive to Zoobox. First the sculptor makes a model of clay that is coated with a thick layer of wax. The wax is then covered with a perforated clay mold. When heated, the mold will “lose” the wax as it runs out of the holes. Molten brass is then poured into the place of the “lost-wax” and after the work cools, the sculptor breaks the mold, removes the clay core, and files and polishes the sculpture. The most important advantage of the lost-wax method is the ease of casting sculptures with elaborate curves. Donatello's David (15th Century) and The Thinker from Rodin (19th century) would not have been created without the lost-wax method. When reviewing the Zoobox Brass Collection, remember that it was created by the same process employed for centuries by ancient empires. |
